Week 8: How to create a value system?
Company culture, Harry Dry's writing principle, Why not to startup!
One lesson: Your team would articulate your company’s values.
This insight is from a founder with 20+ years of experience in the hiring industry.
Here’s what he had to say:
→ You don’t have a value system when you start. It’s just your biases.
→ Three ways to build a value system that lays foundation for a solid company culture:
One, interview people that have worked with you for some amount of time. He interviewed about 60 people. The number can vary.
Second, ask them specifically these 3 questions:
Why did you join the company?
What motivates you to working the company?
Where do you see the company in the future?
Three, study these interviews and pick out themes. These themes would translate to value system that your company thrives on.
One marketing insight: Follow Harry Dry’s three fundamental rules for good copy:
1. Can you visualize it?
2. Can you falsify it?
3. Can nodody else say this?
Find some examples below
“If you have three no’s, you’ve probably written a lot of rubbish. If you have three yes’s, you’re on to something” ~ Harry Dry
Can you visualise it?
Can you falsify it?
Can nobody else say it?
And I gave it a shot with my newsletter tag line: “A weekly newsletter for marketers in Bangalore & founders across India”
Not perfect, but tried executing the principles.
One thought: Entrepreneurship humanises you. Makes you humble.
I find people saying hundred things without any experience of doing it.
I feel like telling them to stay calm and focus on one thing because starting is easy, staying in the game is hard.
